Australian Perspecta 1997: Between Art and NatureNew Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney"Say Ahh" was an installation created for the diverse users of the hospital. By day the installation space was a lively corridor for outpatients and their families. At night it became a cul-de-sac providing a place for quiet contemplation and opportunity for respite from late night vigils. We expanded our ongoing experimentation with Wardian Cases, originally used by botanists to transport plants between Australia and London in the early 1800's. Enclosed in clear spherical travel cases were real flycatching plants, while larger faux plants with inbuilt speakers "broke through" the walls of the cases. From the speakers issued sounds of patients imitating nature and making nonsense sound. Children were fascinated by the mad sounds and the plants of prey. |
